Stella

“Wickko Inc. How may I help you?”

Stella, a long-legged brunette with brown eyes, lowered her head and prepared to hear some trifle unimportant messages. There was half of a workday left, and she wanted to spend it without breaking a sweat. Whoever said that answering the phone calls on a hotline is a viable way of earning money must have been crazy. But Stella didn’t mind staying at work. After all, there was no personal life to care about.

But the voice on the line made the girl cringe.

“HEY, YOU! You haven’t delivered counterwickets that I ordered last Saturday! I want to complain!”

What an unpleasant voice, Stella thought.

“I’m sorry, sir. What’s your name? How can I address you?”

“What do you need my name for?! You dirty scoundrels, cheating me out of counterwickets!”

Stella sighed. The day was ruined irreversibly by some crazy lunatic who wasn’t content with the corporation. How could this young man be so rude?

“Excuse me, sir. I’m sure we’ll figure out something with your order. But, since you know my name already, I want to be sure that we’re on equal footing. Experience shows it helps to solve problems faster.”

“Really?”

The man calmed down a little.

“You can call me Scott.”

The girl cheered up. She liked the names starting with an S, whoever had them.

“Ok, Scott. If you tell me your order number, I’ll check it out on the database.”

Scott made a pause – he must have looked at his papers. The girl sighed quietly. Why did she get the madmen of the community?

“FFT-3725,” the man dictated.

“Thank you, Scott. I’m checking it right now… Yes, we have your order processed in the database. The record shows that the counterwickets were,” Stella got her eyes widened up, “delivered two days ago.”

“YOU DIRTY SCOUNDRELS!” Scott shouted at the receiver as if he was bitten by a dog.

This reminds me why I don’t like men, Stella thought.

“Sir, please calm down. We’ll figure out your order, eventually. The record shows that the counterwickets were delivered by the address,” she repeated the address, “at 12 AM. And the person of the house has signed the form, acknowledging the delivery.”

“That’s… not me! I wasn’t at home two days ago, and nobody called to notify me about the counterwickets! You scam artists! That’s a dirty lie! I have received nothing at all!”

“Maybe your wife signed the delivery form,” Stella suggested while thinking that nobody would want to marry such a person. But she was wrong.

“My wife… died a year ago,” Scott breathed out, and there was a silence on the line for a few seconds. Stella wiped out the sweat from her forehead.

“I’m so sorry, Scott,” she said softly.

“You’d better be sorry about the counterwickets,” Scott grumbled, and the girl felt emotions boiling inside her. She wanted to say something but didn’t have a chance.

“If Sandra was alive, she would tolerate the way you’re treating me right now! I want my counterwickets, and I want them fast! Or either I will sue you! Any lawyer will say that
